Bath Literary Festival March 2013

Independent Voices
Environment, resources and economy
1 – 2pm Guildhall

Is it too late? How do we balance our handling of the economic crisis with protecting the environment? Is British wildlife heading for extinction? Can business really save the planet? Michael McCarthy, The Independent’s award-winning environment writer discusses the issues with Andrew Simms (Cancel the Apocalypse: Why We Need to Stop Growing and Start Living), Jason Drew (The Story of the Fly and How It Can Save the World) and Matthew Davidson, Head of the Inorganic Chemistry Group at Bath University.

Festival on Tour
Jason Drew: The Story Of The Fly
Keynsham Library 6.15 – 7.15pm
Free entry, but please register in advance for tickets through Bath Box Office
The fly exists on every inhabited continent, yet few if any of us understand its importance and use and fewer still how it could be at the core of a new industry.  Jason Drew, a self-confessed ‘environmental capitalist’, discusses his book The Story Of The Fly, which takes a fun and businesslike look at an animal that most of us think of as a pest but could help save the world.

It is without doubt Africa’s Century. Do we want it?

Sustainable Profitable Capitalism
Driving profit through saving the planet is the new capitalism. With shareholders suing companies for cheating - maximising ST profits but ruining the long term prospects and sustainability- Why PE ratios of sustainable businesses are higher - the influence of green funds on capital allocation

Jason’s talk was excellent. His lateral thinking on the question of human sustainability is remarkable. We all enjoyed it and have learnt a lot from him. I can recommend his talk to any of the Rotary Clubs.

Feedback from Delegate

I came to your talk at GIBS on Tuesday night and I felt compelled to write and tell you how wonderfully inspirational I found it. My parents have worked actively in the sustainability field for the last 15 years and so while the broader themes of what is happening in the world were not new to me, your portrayal of these themes and how you tied them together into shaping forces for Africa was something I really enjoyed. What was particularly awe inspiring for me was your brief discourse on the array of green businesses you are involved in.

Green Expo Johannesburg, September 2012

How on earth can we live together?
We cannot all have a the material gratification that the industrial revolution promised for all but delivered to so few. The sustainability revolution has started and the industrial era is over. What does the 21st Century hold for humanity.

My mom was at your talk at the Green Expo, and she said that you are a true inspiration. I have read both of your books and I am also passionate about the environment. I am currently sitting in a meeting for the environmental committee I am part of, Generation Earth , and we are discussing the Green Economy and Sustainable business. Your work immediately came to mind. Thank you for being an inspiration to me, and ,hopefully, I will be able to inspire others through your work in the green economy
